Americans Are Snuggling and Struggling to Get to Sleep

AVP Home Page   (ARA)- While some may feel love conquers all, environmental comfort factors such as room temperature and uncomfortable mattresses, cramped sleeping conditions and noises are robbing many American adults of a good night’s sleep. One in four say they regularly have trouble falling or staying asleep, according to a recent survey, and one in 10 say their last totally satisfying night’s sleep was last year.

Eighty-three percent of Americans with sleeping partners say they snuggle an average of 2.7 hours a week despite bedroom discomforts and disagreements, according to the 2004 Sleep Habits Survey conducted by Select Comfort, the nation’s leading bed retailer and creator of the Sleep Number bed. “Americans may be snuggling to get to sleep, but they are struggling to get a high-quality night’s rest,” says Pete Bils, a sleep expert. ”This is a great time of year to think about creating a comfortable bedroom environment and improving our sleep habits.”

Environmental comfort factors affecting sleep quality

Finding an agreeable bedroom temperature wreaks havoc in households. Fifty-eight percent of those with sleeping partners say it is the hardest environmental factor to compromise on with their partner. Other issues include too much sound (49 percent) and too much light (43 percent). Having enough sleeping space to stretch out on is the most difficult for 16 percent.

Disagreements keeping couples awake

Mattress firmness is also an area of disagreement in the bedroom. About one in three of those who have a sleeping partner say their partner prefers a firmer mattress than they do, while 23 percent say their partner prefers a softer sleep surface.

You can get a better night’s sleep “Fortunately, there are options that can help couples get a better night’s sleep,” Bils says. “Dual-weight comforters or dual-weight blankets can help accommodate the temperature preferences of each individual. Or, if you can’t agree on how firm or soft a mattress should be, try a bed that allows each sleep partner to adjust the firmness on their side of the bed for personalized comfort.”

For those who don’t want to compromise on soft or hard mattresses, one solution is The Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort. This mattress features an innovative dual-adjustable air chamber technology that allows each person to choose their ideal firmness without affecting their partners’ choice.

Other survey findings

Geography and sleep: Americans think those on the East Coast suffer the most (26 percent) when it comes to getting a restful night’s sleep, followed by the Northeast (14 percent), the West (14 percent), the Northwest (5 percent) and the Southwest (5 percent). Celebrities and sleep: Americans think Demi Moore is the celebrity mom who sleeps best, followed by Courteney Cox, Meryl Streep and Cindy Crawford.

Age, snuggling and sleep: While snuggling declines slightly with age, 79 percent of those 55 and older still snuggle at least once a week, compared to 89 percent among younger adults. Regardless of one’s age, however, snuggling has its benefits in lulling a person to sleep: those who live alone are more likely to say they have trouble falling asleep (34 percent) than those who do not live alone (23 percent).

Select Comfort Corporation is the nation’s leading bed retailer, holding 26 U.S. issued or pending patents for its personalized sleep products. The company designs, manufactures and markets a line of adjustable-firmness mattresses featuring air-chamber technology, branded the Sleep Number bed, as well as foundations and sleep accessories.
